In a standard SMD strip, individual LED chips are spaced at regular intervals along the strip. Each chip is a discrete point of light, and even with a diffuser fitted, that dotted pattern stays visible at close range — which is what undermines the finished look in any installation where the strip is actually seen.
What COB does differently
A COB strip packs thousands of microscopic chips continuously across its full width, rather than as separated points. The result is a single, unbroken line of light — smooth and even, with no hotspots, even close up and at an angle.
Where it makes the biggest difference
Anywhere the strip sits in direct or near line of sight — kitchen coving, bathroom mirror surrounds, bedroom headboard recesses, slat wall panels, retail display shelving — COB is the right choice. For hidden runs inside closed profiles, where the diffuser face sits well back from the strip itself, standard SMD is perfectly adequate. It's a case of matching the strip to how visible the installation actually is, not defaulting to one or the other.
