Kitchen LED Strip Lighting Ideas

LED strip lighting does more work in a kitchen than almost any other room. Layer it correctly across the worktop, ceiling, plinth and shelving, and the space becomes genuinely functional after dark — not just lit.

Most kitchens are lit with ceiling downlights alone. The problem is directionality: overhead lights are blocked by your own body the moment you stand at the worktop, casting shadows exactly where you need to see. LED strip lighting solves this by putting the light source close to the task, pointed at the work surface, from a position that cannot be obstructed.

The key is treating the kitchen as a series of distinct zones — each with its own lighting requirement, brightness target, and colour temperature. Task lighting at the worktop. Ambient lighting from above the cabinets or ceiling cove. Accent at plinth level. Display lighting inside shelving and niches. Each can be switched or dimmed independently.

Under-cabinet lighting

The purpose of under-cabinet LED lighting is to put direct, even light onto the worktop — exactly where you are chopping, preparing, and reading labels. Positioned on the underside of wall units, a strip in a surface profile throws a clean, shadow-free wash across the full depth of the counter.

Overhead downlights cannot do this. When you stand at the counter to prepare food, your body blocks the downlight beam and casts a shadow onto the very surface you are working on. Under-cabinet strips eliminate this entirely because the light source is in front of you, not above and behind you.

Mount the strip 5–7cm back from the front edge of the cabinet so light falls onto the worktop rather than onto the splashback. If your cabinets have a front frame or rail, mount behind it so the strip is completely invisible from standing height.

Ceiling cove lighting

Placing a strip above the wall cabinets — or recessing one into a shadow gap or cornice at ceiling level — directs light upward so the ceiling itself becomes the light source. The result is a large, soft, completely glareless ambient wash across the room with no visible fitting and no harsh beam.

In open-plan kitchens this layer of ambient lighting is particularly useful: it lets the space shift between bright cooking mode and a softer atmosphere for dining or entertaining without changing the fixtures. A CCT-adjustable strip makes this a single-button change from the same installation.

Kitchen plinth LED lighting floating effect

Plinth lighting

A strip mounted inside the plinth cavity at floor level washes light downward across the floor, creating the impression that the kitchen units are floating above the ground. The effect is subtle during the day and striking after dark — one of the details that makes a kitchen feel genuinely considered rather than standard.

Plinth lighting is accent, not task. Keep the brightness low (150–300 lm/m) so the floating effect remains subtle. The strip should be recessed inside the plinth cavity pointing downward toward the floor, so the source is completely hidden from any normal standing or seated eye level — you see only the wash of light on the flooring below.

IP44 is the correct minimum for a domestic kitchen floor zone — adequate protection against mopping water. IP65 is worth considering if the floor sees heavy water use: directly adjacent to a dishwasher with frequent spills, or in a professional kitchen environment. It is not a blanket requirement.

Open shelving & display niches

Open shelving and recessed niches benefit from COB strip on the underside of each shelf. The continuous, dot-free output means there are no hotspots on the shelf surface below and items on display are lit evenly from edge to edge — something discrete SMD strips cannot reliably achieve when viewed at close range.

Match the colour temperature to the under-cabinet strips in the same sightline. Mixing 2700K and 4000K in the same visible field — even if neither is wrong in isolation — creates visual incoherence that undermines the whole scheme. If you want flexibility across the kitchen, specify CCT-tunable strip throughout.

For glass-fronted display cabinets, wire the interior lighting to a separate circuit from under-cabinet and ambient strips. Being able to switch display lighting off independently — particularly for feature cabinets with glassware — gives far more control over the final look of the kitchen.

COB strip: the professional choice for kitchens

COB (Chip on Board) strip produces a continuous, seamless line of light with no visible individual diode points — even at very close range and glancing angles.

Under kitchen cabinets and on shelf undersides, where the strip is viewed from below and the surface being lit is close to the source, COB makes a visible difference. Standard SMD strip shows individual bright points. COB does not.

Use COB anywhere the strip or its output on a surface will be visible. Use standard SMD strip inside fully enclosed profiles where the output is the only thing seen.

Kitchen lighting design principles

Layer your light sources

Task at the worktop, ambient from the ceiling or cove, accent at the plinth. Each layer serves a different function and should be switchable independently. All three together give full control over the atmosphere at any time of day.

Specify lm/m, not wattage

Wattage tells you energy use. Lumens per metre tells you light output. Match brightness to function: 400–600 lm/m for task, 300–500 lm/m for ambient, 150–300 lm/m for accent. Too bright an accent strip defeats the effect.

Consistent colour temperature

Every strip in the same sightline should be the same colour temperature. Mixing 2700K and 4000K in the same visible field creates visual incoherence even if neither is wrong individually. CCT-tunable strip throughout gives you full flexibility.

CRI 90+ for task zones

CRI measures how accurately a light source renders colours. In a kitchen where you are judging the colour of food and ingredients, CRI 90 or above is recommended for all under-cabinet task lighting. Lower CRI is acceptable for plinth and ambient zones.

Hide the source, show the effect

Good kitchen strip lighting is invisible in use — the light is visible, the fitting is not. Plan sight lines so the strip cannot be seen from standing, seated, or dining positions. A visible strip that was meant to be concealed is the most common sign of a poorly planned installation.

IP rating by zone

IP20 for ceiling-level and dry worktop zones. IP44 for above-sink splashzones and plinth floor zones where cleaning water reaches. IP65 only where heavy or frequent water exposure is genuinely expected — not as a blanket kitchen recommendation.
