What LED Driver Do I Need?

What LED Driver Do I Need?

Your LED strips need a driver to convert 240V AC mains to the 24V DC the strips run on. Choosing the wrong driver is the most common installation mistake — and the easiest to avoid.

Step 1 — Calculate your wattage

Driver sizing formula
1
Find the watts-per-metre (W/m) on your strip's product page
2
Multiply by your total run length in metres
3
Add 20% headroom — choose the next driver size up
Example: 3m of 10W/m strip = 30W. Add 20% = 36W minimum. Choose the CORE 60W.

The CORE driver range

CORE 15W
Short runs up to 1.5m at 10W/m
CORE 30W
Runs up to 2.5m at 10W/m
CORE 60W
Most versatile — covers most residential projects
CORE IP44 30W
For bathroom installations where the driver is in a damp zone

Do I need a dimmable driver?

If you want to dim your strips, you need a dimmable driver. Standard drivers cannot be used with dimmer switches. The Lumily CORE Dimmable (Titan) series supports both leading-edge and trailing-edge dimming.

Always check dimmer compatibility before ordering — not all dimmer switches work with LED drivers. If in doubt, contact our team.

Receivers and remotes

  • CORE Single Colour Receiver — for dimming standard white strips
  • CORE CCT Receiver — for OPTIX S+ adjustable white strips
  • CORE RGB CCT Receiver — for OPTIX RGBWW colour-change strips
  • CORE Universal Remote — compatible with single-colour and CCT receivers

⚠ Never connect more wattage than your driver is rated for. Always size up — a driver running at 60–70% of its maximum will run cooler and last longer.
