Living Room LED Strip Lighting Ideas
A living room usually only has one light source: the ceiling. Strip lighting adds the layers that turn it from lit to considered — ambient, feature and accent, each doing a different job.
Most living rooms rely on a single central ceiling light, sometimes backed up by a lamp or two. That gives you one brightness and one mood, whether you're watching a film, reading, or having people round. LED strip lighting breaks that up into separate layers you can control independently, so the room can shift from bright and functional to low and relaxed without moving a single lamp.
The five ideas below cover the areas where strip lighting makes the biggest difference in a living room: the ceiling line, the TV wall, shelving and alcoves, feature walls, and stairs. Each has a different job, so the specification — brightness, colour temperature, and strip type — is different too.
Ceiling cove lighting
Running a strip around the ceiling perimeter — in a shadow gap, a cove, or behind a plasterboard upstand — points the light upward so the ceiling itself does the work of lighting the room. There's no visible fitting, no glare, and no shadows, just a soft wash across the whole ceiling.
Of everything on this page, this is the single change that has the biggest effect on how a living room feels. It replaces the flat, single-source light of a pendant or downlights with something closer to daylight bouncing around a room — and because it's a separate circuit, you can bring it up on its own for evenings without touching the main lights at all.

TV and media wall backlighting
A strip run around the back of the TV or media unit lights the wall behind it rather than the screen itself. This cuts the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room, which is a genuine, well-documented cause of eye strain during long viewing sessions — not just a look.
It's also one of the easier strips to retrofit, since most TVs and media walls already have a gap or recess behind them to run the strip and hide the connection. A strip with both white and colour output covers you for everyday use as well as for a bit of atmosphere when you want it.

Bookshelf and alcove lighting
Two different jobs here, both suited to strip lighting. On a bookshelf, a strip fixed to the underside of each shelf lights the shelf below it evenly, so books and objects aren't lit from a single point or left half in shadow. In an alcove, a strip run vertically up the back wall washes light behind whatever's displayed there, giving it depth rather than a flat, front-lit look.
Use COB strip rather than standard strip for both. At the close range these are viewed from, a strip made of individual diodes shows up as a row of dots on the shelf or wall — COB gives a single continuous line of light instead, which is what makes the shelf or alcove look intentional rather than just illuminated.

Feature wall and slat panels
Slat wall panels have become one of the most common feature-wall treatments in UK living rooms over the last few years, and most of them are designed with a gap behind for lighting. A strip run behind the panel — surface-mounted or recessed, depending on the panel depth — throws light out between the slats along the full height or width of the wall.
This is a case where the strip type genuinely matters to the finished look, not just as a nice-to-have. Slats are viewed close up and at an angle, so any hotspotting from a standard strip is immediately visible between the gaps. COB is worth the difference in price here.

Staircase lighting
Where a staircase runs off an open-plan living room, lighting it properly does two things: it makes the stairs safer to use at night, and it extends the lighting scheme into a part of the house that's usually left with just a single switch at the top or bottom.
Strip can be fitted under the nose of each tread, or in the gap between treads on an open-riser staircase, so each step is picked out individually rather than lit as one long run. Pairing this with a motion sensor means the stairs light themselves as someone approaches, rather than relying on someone finding a switch in the dark.

COB strip: the right choice for visible installations
COB (Chip on Board) strip produces one continuous line of light with no visible individual diode points, even close up and at an angle.
In a living room, most of the strip lighting on this page is seen directly — behind slats, along a shelf edge, up an alcove wall. That's exactly where standard SMD strip shows its individual bright points and COB doesn't.
Use COB wherever the strip or its light on a nearby surface will be visible. Standard strip is fine inside fully enclosed profiles where you only ever see the output, never the source.

Living room lighting design principles
Layer your light sources
Ambient from the ceiling line, feature at the TV wall or slats, accent on shelves and stairs. Wire each to its own switch so you can bring up only what you need, rather than one light for every occasion.
Specify lm/m, not wattage
Wattage tells you what it costs to run. Lumens per metre tells you how bright it actually is. As a rough guide: 300–500 lm/m for ambient ceiling runs, 150–350 lm/m for feature and accent work.
Consistent colour temperature
Keep every strip within the same sightline at the same colour temperature. A warm shelf next to a cool ceiling cove reads as a mistake, even though neither is wrong on its own.
Build in dimming and CCT control
A living room does more jobs than any other room in the house — films, reading, hosting. Dimmable, CCT-tunable strip lets the same installation cover all of them, rather than fitting a fixed scheme that only really works for one.
Hide the source, show the effect
You should see the light, not the strip. Plan the profile and mounting position from your normal seated eye line before you fit anything — a visible LED strip is usually a sign it was fitted without checking the sightline first.
Plan power and driver placement first
Work out where each driver will sit and how the cable run gets there before you fit the strip, not after. It's the detail that most often gets missed, and the hardest one to fix once everything else is installed.
